FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Group plans to make Atlantic crossing in 2007
Dana
Point
, CA – (
November 27, 2006)— Following the success of the2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally (NAR) comes a new bid for a group crossing of the
Atlantic Ocean
. Next summer, a band of long-range cruisers plans to travel from
Florida
to
Gibraltar
, closely mirroring the route and itinerary of the NAR, however, without a Nordhavn-staffed boat leading the way.
Dubbed Med Bound 2007, the crossing is being coordinated by Milt Baker, the NAR Organizing Team leader, who was responsible for all docking arrangements, fuel buying and shore excursions on the Rally. That means important contacts and local knowledge will already be well-established.
The idea for the group trip came about after Baker and his wife, Judy, purchased a brand new Nordhavn 47,
Bluewater
, last summer. The couple had always intended on crossing the Atlantic and cruising the
Mediterranean
. And after participating in the Rally and seeing first hand the benefits of voyaging in the company of others, they felt it was the best way to go. “We’re really interested in the camaraderie of having other boats along on the trip,” Baker said.
The obvious difference between the NAR and Med Bound is the absence of the Nordhavn technical team while en route. Still, Baker, an experienced cruiser, feels Med Bound 2007 is the ideal venue for less-confident boaters to get their feet wet. Why is it common to see Nordhavns buddy-boating on long passages? Because “there’s not only safety, but more fun, in numbers,” he said. In fact, last June,
Bluewater
made the trip from Bermuda to
New England
alongside Nordhavn 43
Summer Skis
for this very reason.
Med Bound 2007 is not an official Nordhavn rally and is not being sponsored by PAE, but the manufacturer is assisting with promotion of the event. Interested participants can visit
